Somatic Experiencing (SE)

What is Somatic Experiencing (SE)

Somatic Experiencing (SE), developed by Peter Levine, is a body-oriented approach to working with stress and trauma. It is based on the understanding that overwhelming experiences can disturb the natural balance of the nervous system, leaving the body held in protective responses such as fight, flight, freeze, or collapse.

Rather than focusing on retelling difficult memories, SE gently guides attention toward the body’s sensations, breathing, and subtle physical responses. Through this process, the nervous system is supported in completing stress responses that may have remained unresolved.
